Welcome
Cumbria Safety Cameras Web Site
This site contains background information on Cumbria Safety Cameras, the operational policies and facts on the number of deaths and injuries.
There are also sections that explain the legal process if you get stopped, some advice on how to plan your journey to enable you to drive within the speed limit, an online press office, a section for motorcyclists, an electronic library where you can download such items as leaflets and posters.
This site does not contain a list of the hotspots previously monitored by Cumbria Safety Cameras. Since June 2007 Cumbria has operated a Random Road Watch policy whereby,in effect,we can place the safety camera vans anywhere on the county road network.
Adoption of this policy meant that in 2007 Cumbria came in under the Government 2010 killed and serious injury(KSI)casualty target three years early.
In 2008 Cumbria recorded 29 fatalities, a record low. Of those 29, 25 were local drivers. Serious injury and slight injury casualties were also down on previous years.
Further decreases were seen in 2009 when 24 fatalities were recorded, the lowest for more than 20 years. Again, serious and slight injury casualties went down during the year.
The success of the Random Road Watch strategy has meant that the Cumbrian operation has come under close scrutiny of the Association of Chief Police Officers and the Department for Transport.
